The Reggale and Dredhop Homebrew Competition is the largest, longest running homebrew competition in the state and the Rocky Mountain Region. It is organized and run by Hop Barley and the Alers, the homebrew club of Boulder County, Colorado. Since 1989, we have judged almost 3600 homebrewed beer and mead entries. Last year we received 324 entries. Entry fees collected from the participants go towards the cost of running the competition, including printing, prize ribbons, postage, table and chair rentals and sanctioning fees. Hop Barley and the Alers will be awarding a hand blown glass beer mug and mead chalice to the Best of Show winners from Glass Mountain Studios.

Last year more than 70 volunteers, including judges, stewards, organizers and other helpers participated in putting on the competition. Many hours were spent picking up entries, unpacking out of town entries, sorting into proper categories and doing data entry before actual judging took place.

In addition to ribbons and prizes for the winning entries, each entrant receives valuable feedback from qualified judges on how well their homebrewed beverage exemplifies the style in which it was entered, and also tips on what might be done to improve their next effort. For many brewers, this is the main reason they enter. It is also an opportunity for experienced as well as novice beer and mead judges to test their palates and their skills. We encourage all levels of experience to participate, from beginners to experienced judges and professional brewers.

We rely a great deal on sponsors and donations to put on a first class competition. All sponsors are credited at the competition site, on our website and in the club newsletter. We have been able to hold our entry fee at $7.00 thanks to the generous support of many businesses and individuals. All prizes and donations received are given as prizes to winning entrants. In the event that all prizes are not awarded, any items left over will be kept for next year’s competition.
