Virgin Home Brewer - Starting Tips

Yesterday I met Bill and he told me about this club. To introduce myself, I recently moved to Boulder about 7 months ago. I am a computer programmer and love to drink and try new beers.

I'm interested in trying home brewing. I've never done it before and don't know where to start. Can someone give me some starting tips? Bill mentioned a supply store in Boulder. What is the name and address? What basic equipment and ingredients do I need? Do you have an easy first recipe? Any good websites?
I plan on coming to the meeting this month.
Thanks, Blaine

Another Intro

I guess I'll continue this as the intro thread. I'm Randy, located in Brighton. I spoke with Brandon via TBN forums, and he was gracious enough to plug me into some local talent! Thanks, Brandon, for the info. It'll be nice to get to know some more (almost) locals!
Anyway, my first batch of extract American Weizen is in day 10 of primary ferment. It is killing me to not bottle it yet, but I am going to wait until day 14 at least to bottle it. Hope it turns out. My friend brewed a couple batches last month, and it was pretty good stuff, to my unsophisticated palate, at least. I hope to do all grain eventually. Ok, I'll shut up now....Good to meet you all!

Welcome!

Welcome... Hope to see you at our upcoming meeting on June 26th at the Boulder Outlook. Bring a bottle of your beer... sounds like it'll be a good one!

starting out

Hi Blaine,

Starting out can be somewhat intimidating as there is a world of knowledge and things you can do in homebrewing. But the cool thing is that there's a lot of stepping stones along the way. The local homebrew shop is What's Brewin' and it's located at 2752 47th St., Boulder, CO 80301. The next closest store is at Beer and Wine at Home located at 1325 W. 121st Ave in Westminster. Between the two, you should be well covered. Some good beginner books are the ubiquitous Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian, and I've heard good things about How to Brew by John Palmer. There's also a million and one websites about homebrewing. It's a pretty large and diverse group and it appears to be getting bigger day by day. Please feel free to join us at anytime and ask as many questions as you want!

Oh and btw... green@hopbarley.org will bounce unless you're specifically in that group. Go here for more info on Dan's brew. It'll be a little more advanced for a beginning brewer, but it'll still be fun. Every third friday, Kathy hosts an extract brew-in at her place, which is probably more suited for a beginner. That's tonight!

Green Group is doing a group brew this Sunday at Dan Rabin's house in SE Boulder. This would be a great opportunity to learn a lot. Send an email to the Green Group if you're interested. (green@hopbarley.org)
